*I was given a copy of this set to review. I managed to finish the first book, though it was a struggle. If I ever get to the other books I'll update this to reflect such, but for now I'm setting it aside.*The beginning was excellent. Great setup, interesting characters, lots of potential. Then it does a nosedive into unecessary backstory of a side character which completely breaks the mood. The entire dull, prolongued sequence explains at length things that could have been better conveyed through conversation later on.Then, before we get back to the actually interesting main character, there's a timeskip. The bouncing about from character to character never really gains any cohesion, and the pacing remains incoherent..Magic is inconsistent, or else the main character is extremely narrow-minded and just doesn't think. I found myself regularly frustrated at the complete lack of any cohesion with their abilities. There is clearly a lot of fascinating history and worldbuilding potential in this series, but since nothing is explained until the thick of things, it reads like a series of minor deus-ex-machina (or diablos-ex-machina in several cases) revelations.Which wouldn't be bad in itself, if not for the fact that the story completely disregards the promises it's making. I'm not sure if it's trying to subvert expectations deliberately, but if so it's going it in such a way that it irritates more than anything else.Characterization, I couldn't even begin to follow. Maybe I'm just dumb, but character motivations are often unclear and their capabilities undefined, such that decisions felt arbitrary at times. Things that should be offscreen are shown, things that need to be shown aren't.I can't remember the last time I was driven to such frustration by a story.The worst part is that it has so much potential. There were scenes that genuinely pulled me in, made me care, wouldn't let me put the book down. Then there would be something jarring, throwing me out of the story so completely I nearly stopped reading again and again. If not for the fact that I was asked to review it, I wouldn't have made it as far as I did.I can see the shape of what the author was trying to do and it could be amazing, but in its current state it just isn't quite there yet. Overall it just needs more work.
I've been an avid fan of the Rhenwars saga since I first read Darkmage 2 years ago. So now that the series has come to a close I can't think of a better way to celebrate it than with this collected edition. Not only do you get all four volumes in the main series, you also get the prequel novel which explores the history of Rhen. Plus some lovely new artwork as well.Steeped in grimdark traditions of brutality, heartbreak and moral ambiguity, the series does not shy away from showing the ostensible heroes as flawed and sometimes in the wrong, or letting us have empathy for some of those reviled as demons. But at the same time, there are moments of hope and wonder, even in the darkest times. It gives us a richly detailed world that expands with each new instalment.This collected edition is perfect for both new readers or returning readers looking to re-immerse themselves in this world.
In my opinion this is made by an author that loves fantasy novels! It has it's moments. You'd be better off reading all the wheel of Time books to completion.It's hard to read. Has little narrative direction. It is intriguing however hard it is to read. Book one went fast. Book two took a while. I've just started book three. If by book 4 I feel like changing my rating I will. But really this is very reminiscent of the Wheel of Time series. Perhaps a little Sword of Truth added in. 2 stars for now until I complete the series3stars. It has it's moments. However the ending is unsatisfying. I feel this is the authors first try at this. I can see the growth as the story went on. Much better toward the end but I wanted more from the ending.
Fantastic. Rich. Deep. Emotive. Engrossing. Real. This pentalogy is one of the top series I have read since I began at the age of five. My only regret is it was kindle and I won’t have physical copies on my library shelf. The story was rich, inventive, captivating; just plain fantastic. The characters real. The world well visualized. The characters real; both virtuous and flawed. I look forward to what comes next. Well done!
If you like stories in which most of the major characters are killed off (as in Game of Thrones) you may enjoy these books.Not that it matters as most of the characters are thoroughly unlikable.
Such an exciting series! It's unputdownable!!
This 5 book quintology (is that a word?) has to be the bargain of the year. I found it to be a compelling reflection of the human condition here on earth, each well-developed personality bringing to focus a unique emotional disposition that mirrors the variety of soul conditions we find here on Earth. Probably we all have experienced the journey from sin to redemption, from suffering to healing, from emptiness to love and from failure to victory. This is part of the flesh that clothes this adventure story with all its unexpected twists and turns. It's a long read but I never found it to be laborsome. Rather, there was always the curiosity about "what's next?" I highly recommend this well-written and imaginative series.
I absolutely loved this series. To me it was like a cross between GOT and LOTR. I fell in love with the characters including the hellhound. I laughed, cried and read till the wee hours. I highly recommend this series.
