About the Author
Beth Genné is Professor of Dance History and Art History at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in the Dance Department and the Arts and Ideas concentration of the Residential College. She has written numerous book chapters on British ballet and dance in film (including Gene Kelly and Vincente Minnelli) and articles in such journals as Dance Research, Dance Chronicle, and Art Journal. She has contributed criticism and feature articles to The Dancing Times of London. She was Director of research for Balanchine's musical films for the Popular Balanchine Project of the George Balanchine Foundation. Her first book, The Making of a Choreographer, was on the early training and choreographic development of Ninette de Valois, founder of the Royal Ballet.

Many readers of this book will be drawn to it for the same reasons that viewers at a star-gazing party are drawn to books on astronomy. I love the musical films of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, and wanted to know more about how these musicals were choreographed and filmed, and how the genre evolved. Genné expertly discusses context and technique in the films and dancers she examines. Her descriptions make the reader want to go beyond the book’s descriptions and still photos, and experience the movies!
Very comprehensive, well written, a gem!!!
Vivid and engaging. Growing up on film musicals, I enjoyed their dance sequences with no idea how innovative they were. While Dance Me a Song shows meticulous scholarship, it’s immensely readable and informative for us non-specialists who treasure this piece of Americana and want to know more.
