From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—This companion novel to Love, Lucas centers on 17-year-old Emmy Martin. It's been one month since Lucas, Emmy's best friend and secret love, passed away, and she is trying to cope with the loss. Emmy hopes that mountain biking will help her forget, but she can't drown out her memories, and she's not ready to talk about Lucas or forget about him. Then her parents deliver a devastating blow: Emmy's mom has been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's. Emmy throws herself into mountain biking harder than ever, hoping to ignore what Alzheimer's will do to her mom and their family. Her goal is to win a big race and get sponsored. Her nemesis, Cole Evans, offers to help her hone her biking skills. Will Emmy take the chance to open up to someone new and accept her life circumstances? Emmy is a sympathetic, believable character, and while Sedgwick shows her coping believably with grief, she keeps the focus on the big race Emmy is training for, along with her growing relationship with Cole. The secondary characters are distinct, but since the story is told from a first-person point of view, Emmy is the main concern. VERDICT Not a first purchase. Recommend this to fans of Sedgwick's Love, Lucas and those who like realistic fiction with a hopeful ending.—Natalie Struecker, Atlantic Public Library, IA

This was a good read. I won't give you a synopsis of the book as you can read it above. I will say that I read almost all the books my pre-teens read to make sure that they are suitable for their ages. My daughters both enjoyed this book as did I.

I loved this book. Such a touching story of loss, change, and grieving. I highly recommend this book to young adults and up!

The company that l work make this book And had to have it

This is a companion book to Love, Lucas. That one was about the sister of boy who died from cancer. This one was about the girlfriend of the same boy.Well, they never actually were officially boyfriend/girlfriend, but she lived next door to him for years and loved him forever. They only confessed just before he died. Sadness. And so this story picks up a few months later and she is still dealing with his death and his loss.So she immerses herself into her love and hobby of mountain bike racing. There's a new-ish boy (it's been about a year since he moved in) that has bugged her since he arrived and who actually took over her position as captain of the bike team. She does not like him.Which means, of course, that they will connect! And so that's the love story. He's had his eye on her since the beginning but she has been annoyed by him. All that changes of course, and he is not what she thought he was. It's a blast to read/watch unfold.Meanwhile, she has her family life situation to deal with too, which is that her mom is suffering from early onset Alzheimers. More sadness. Yes.But despite all this sadness, I totally enjoyed this book. Fast and easy to read. Lovely romance. Cute characters. Fun look at mountain biking, which... why would anyone do this? CRAZY!

Thank you to Sky Pony Press for providing me a copy of book in exchange for a fair review.Emmy hasn't been dealing with things well, she quit the mountain bike team after Lucas's death and hasn't won first place in a long time. Just when things are starting to look up she finds out that her mom has been diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer. Now she is trying to navigate her feelings for Cole, her place on the team and the reality of losing her mom as she knows her. Then an accident almost changes everything and Emmy has to decide what is really important.I am going to note that I didn't realize this was a sequel or a follow up until after I started reading it. Love, Lucas is the first book. However, I didn't feeling like I was missing anything by not having read it first. Emmy is a passionate mountain biker who is still kind of reeling from Lucas dying a year ago.Lucas is Emmy's first love, but they really never had a relationship. She never told him how she felt until right before he died after he revealed that he had been in love with her for years, but he was too afraid to tell her. Cole moved to Utah during that time frame and has only been Emmy's friend up until now. He is helping her train for her rematch against Whitney. She feels more than a little guilty about her feelings for Cole, but she cautiously begins to deal with the past and the present until the moment that everything changes. This was a quick easy read. It had me in tears several times, and I enjoyed the book and it's message a lot.

Sky Pony Press is starting to be my go-to publisher for young adult books. Their newest addition, SWITCHING GEARS, a follow up to LOVE, LUCAS by Chantele Sedgwick, is a wonderful example of what I think makes a great young adult romance. The writing is easy-flowing and never bogs down, the action is exciting and plentiful, and the lead characters have realistic flaws and grow throughout the story. And, of course, the heroine gets her HEA.Seventeen-year-old Emmy Martin loves mountain biking. It's what makes her feel alive. As the story begins, she still mourns the death of her best friend, neighbor, and secret love Lucas, who died from cancer the month before. She strains to finish a race in first place but is passed by her nemesis, Whitney. Irritated at always coming in behind Whitney, she asks for a rematch. A cocky Cole offers to help her train, but Emmy chooses to do it by herself. She's afraid to get close to too many people, since she fears they might leave her. So she keeps only Kelsie as her friend and confidant.Kelsie is Emmy's best friend and an exceptional one, too. She refuses to let Emmy wallow in her sadness, constantly pushing and prodding her to get out and enjoy life. She makes Emmy laugh, and she encourages her to give Cole a chance. She is perfect BFF material. And then there's Cole. Hot, cocky and a mountain bike racing fiend. Emmy doesn't like him at first, especially after he's named captain of their school's mountain biking team, the one she started the previous summer. She's wary of him when he offers to train her for the rematch with Whitney. So Emmy turns him down. He continues to try and help her and eventually asks her out. He's supportive, treats her well and likes to tease her. But most of all, he cares enough to challenge Emmy to be her very best. The story includes issues of abandonment, grief, self-doubt, guilt, and believing in yourself. It has funny parts mixed in with some sad passages, but it's a wonderful story overall. The only con is that it ended too soon. (I would have liked to see the last chapter expanded to include some of what happened through the year before the Epilogue occurs.) So I'm giving the book a strong 4.5 stars.SWITCHING GEARS is a sweet romance that should appeal to younger teenagers, but older teenagers and adults will enjoy the story too. And it's a book you'll want to keep on your shelf to revisit from time to time.If You Like This, You May Like: LOVE, LUCAS and NOT YOUR AVERAGE FAIRY TALE by Chantele Sedgwick, LIFE BEFORE by Michele Bacon, THAT BURNING SUMMER by Lydia Syson, BY YOUR SIDE by Kasie West, FIRST YEAR by Sarah Hocut, STOLEN KISSES by Kerttu-Liis Kiili, SAINT ANYTHING and JUST LISTEN by Sarah Dessen* Read my other reviews on the Blue Moon Mystery Saloon blog.** An e-galley was provided by Sky Pony Press and Edelweiss for an honest review.
