This book convincingly, in clear language, and with robust science demonstrates that the polar bear population has most likely risen from 10,000 to 40,000 in recent decades, despite big decreases in Arctic summer ice (read the book to find out why science shows that the summer ice decrease doesn’t harm polar bears). The discussions of the polar bear role as a now-failed symbol of impending extinction from climate change, of biased press coverage and fake news, of the use of invalid climate models, of the hostility and dishonesty of some polar bear experts getting a new lease on life from the flow of money to climate alarmists, and of the fraudulent listing of the polar bear as a "threatened" species through the machinations of a top government scientist are additional reasons to buy the book. The vicious and dishonest attacks on her by climate alarmists are revealing and scary. Their deliberate falsifications and other methods of distorting or suppressing inconvenient data alone make this book belong in any library on scientific fraud compared to honest scientific method. Buy it, read it, give copies to friends, and donate copies to students willing to learn about the real world of climate science.
That bear will be cheered up by this fascinating book about science, about the making of public policy, about climate change, and above all – about nature. They all intersect in the debate about the future of polar bears. Zoologist Crockford crispy tells the history of the rise and fall of polar bears as climate change icons. It is an engrossing story of a small niche group of dedicated biologists, the apex predator of the polar regions, the American public - and the slow but decisive workings of science. It is well documented, with excellent footnotes for those that like to know sources. The graphics are clear and well-presented. The Kindle version is well-formatted.
This book is more than a presentation of the evidence for the change in polar bear populations. It is a good lesson about the scientific method. It is also an eye-opener about academia and so called peer-reviewed journals. Well worth the read.
because progressives will hate to hear this.
Nothing like a book that bases its science on climate change denial draped in false statistics.
This is fascinating if imperfect book. You can sum up the conclusion as: "Science is hard, and nature is wonderfully complex." I was surprised to learn that polar bears are the only species declared threatened based on model predictions of the future rather than an actual census of the population. The author makes a convincing case that the model predicted catastrophic population declines if "summer" sea declined by 50% from prime polar bear habitat. The models predicted this would happen by 2050. In fact it has occurred nearly every year since 2007 and yet the polar bears are doing just fine. In fact sightings and attacks are increasing. The author never once "denies" global warming but argues the polar regions have historically variable weather and climate. The negative one-star review is a simple ad hominem attack and like the 14 co-authors of a peer-reviewed polemic by noted global warming proponents does not address a substantive scientific critique. With a better editor, I would have given this a five-star review.
politics has ruined science and journalism, and this is an important example of just how it happens
