I see the problem. There is confusion because some say it's too easy, some say perfect. There are different versions and the title DOES NOT specify the level. However watch for the cover image. At the top in tiny letters you can read, "Piano Solo", "Easy Piano Solo", or in this case "Big Note". These titles need to be more clear. I caught that and made sure I got the "Piano Solo" version and I'm pleased.
This 40-page piano solo book is a wonderful translation of Dario Marianelli's simple but poignant score to the 2005 film "Pride and Prejudice."The book includes 12 of the 17 tracks that appear on the P&P soundtrack CD, and the transcriptions are pretty much exactly as you hear it on the recording. The soundtrack is piano-based with an orchestra, but the songs translate very well into piano solos. Many of the songs are only approximately 2 pages long, which at first glance was disappointing; however, realize that most of the CD tracks are only 1 or 2 minutes in length. So the sheet music stays true to the soundtrack CD.They have chosen the best tracks to put in this book. (I would've liked to have "A Postcard to Henry Purcell" in the book, but that is more of a violin piece, anyway.) Pretty much each has its own distinct theme, yet just like Marianelli's score, they have a unified sound. The sound is a fresh, modern take on Jane Austen's 19th Century England. The music is simple -- scales, trills, and arpeggios, hardly a chord in there. But in its simplicity there is a great emotional depth for pianists to experience. The music is easy to (mostly-)intermediate: simple enough for the novice (at least for someone with 2 years' playing experience and much practicing) but rich enough for an advanced player to really make the notes shine. (Just listen to the fantastic performance by pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet on the soundtrack CD to see how much can be made of this simple score.)Where the songs are difficult to play is this: sweeping arpeggios that require intuitive fingering and favor larger hands; quick grace notes; having to play with crossed hands; occasional fast tempos (e.g. "moderately fast, in 4" on "Georgiana"). Timing/rhythm is pretty simple -- eighth notes for the most part, but can be challenging and irregular at times.Fingering is not included. Pedaling is. Only a few songs specify a metronome count (e.g. Liz on Top of the World states a quarter note = ca. 144; Living Sculptures of Pemberley merely states "slowly, lilting").There is no spine on this book. It's got a glossy back and front cover, folded and stapled. Still, very much worth purchasing at the Amazon price of less than $10 (over $5 off the cover price).Here are some more specifics:1. Mrs. Darcy: 5 pages.Each composition is pretty fabulous, but the standouts are "Dawn," "Living Sculptures of Pemberley", "Liz on Top of the World," and "Georgiana."
I ordered this book after having been in love with the soundtrack for about five years and after receiving the sheet music for "Dawn" and loving it. However when I got this book, I opened and to find that all the beautiful arpeggios had been replaced with dotted quarter notes. It makes the book appropriate for someone who has not been playing very long, but for me it was sad because it takes away the movement and the expression that makes the performance by Jean-Yves Thibaudet so enchanting.Maybe I just didn't read well enough before I ordered, but I wanted to make very clear for everybody else that this is not the actual original music - it has been simplified, and if you're looking for anything of a challenge, go find another edition.
I played ages 4-18, and now that my daughter is starting to play I’m trying to dust off the cobwebs- 35 now so it’s been a hot min. I ended at late intermediate/advanced and am probably early intermediate now but it’s starting to come back. I find the book challenging but if I give it some time I can play the pieces. I’d be bored if it were any easier. I got my daughter the easier version and the piano solo version sounds so much better! I’m starting wth Liz on Top of the World and figuring out helpful fingering on YouTube. I can’t wait to dive into this book more!
If you're looking for the real sheet music to the score, this is not it. It's super simplified for more novice-level or intermediate-level piano players.
I'm getting back into piano playing after a few decades of not having a piano. The books from my younger years are currently too hard, as I re-learn how to play. I bought this because I love the music in the movie, and my daughter can play a lot of them (the harder versions!) and I love hearing them. These versions are nice and simple, and I think I'll be playing them at the right tempo soon enough ... and that's exactly what I was hoping for in this purchase.
I usually don't mind the "big book" sheet music, as one can always add personal touches, but honestly, I have played the DVD quite a few times, and there are many places in this book of sheet music where it doesn't seem to pick up the essence of the original.I began to wonder if my mind was playing tricks on me, so I picked up other versions of these pieces which were just a bit more difficult than this easy-to-play book, and found those melodies often far truer to the score than this. If the music from the movie is going through your head, you might want to shop around a bit for something a bit truer to the movie score than this.The good news about this book of music is that 1) it's pretty easy to play, so you can sit right now and enjoy it (even if it wasn't quite what your ear was hoping for), and 2) the notes are large, for those of us who otherwise need reading glasses to see the music :>)This wasn't what I wanted, but it will probably make many piano students very happy.
I am a beginner with piano and this caught my interest because the music is so beautiful. I think that for a beginner (less than a year) it is challenging enough but also easy enough so that the difficulty is not overwhelming. I would highly recommend it. The rhythms have been simplified from the original which is very helpful for me. I think it was a great purchase!
