About the Author
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) was a major scholar of the English language, specializing in Old and Middle English. Twice Professor of Anglo-Saxon (Old English) at the University of Oxford, he also wrote a number of stories, including most famously The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955), which are set in a pre-historic era in an invented version of the world which he called by the Middle English name of Middle-earth.

The 2019 Tolkien Calendar makes an excellent companion for its 2018 predecessor as well as for the much earlier 2008 edition. All three feature artwork by Alan Lee illustrating Tolkien's three "Great Tales" of the First Age: The Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien, and now at long last The Fall of Gondolin. All three of these tales have been recounted in other forms, first by J.R.R. Tolkien himself and then edited and completed by Christopher Tolkien, beginning with The Silmarillion in 1977 and continuing through The History of Middle-earth in the 1980s and 1990s. Publishing them as separate tales allows for the inclusion of several versions written by Tolkien at different times in his life as well as some sumptuous artwork by Alan Lee. Just as 2008's calendar contained art from The Children of Hurin and 2018's from Beren and Luthien, now 2019's depicts The Fall of Gondolin.The 2019 calendar features 13 color illustrations, eight of which are included as plates in the book version of The Fall of Gondolin. A ninth illustration, Tuor Reaches Gondolin, illustrates the front of the book's dust jacket. January and February's illustrations, Hurin and Huor are carried to Gondolin and The Gates of Angband, are repeats of the January and February 2008 calendar's paintings, while 2019's final plate (on the page containing the 2020 calendar grid) Gil-Estel, The Star of High Hope, is a repeat of the illustration for December in the 2018 version. The only completely new illustration is September's Morgoth's Spies Searching for the Secret Way into Gondolin. Like the earlier calendars, 2019's version features appropriate quotes for each plate, and there are smaller illustrations on each calendar grid. Each plate's title is also listed on its page, which is an improvement over the earlier versions.The calendar features a Sunday to Saturday grid, with religious and US/Canadian national holidays, the phases of the moon, and the equinoxes and solstices marked. There is an introductory page with a summary of The Fall of Gondolin by Christopher Tolkien and a rough draft sketch for a painting by Lee, and the last page contains short biographies of J.R.R. Tolkien and Alan Lee which are repeats from 2008 and 2018.This is a beautiful calendar which will enhance any room in which it is displayed. Since Christopher Tolkien has made it clear that The Fall of Gondolin will be his final publication from his father's works, it is bittersweet but highly suitable that the calendar inspired by it should be so magnificent.
I have bought many annual Lord of the Rings wall calendars over the years, most of them with paintings by the Brothers Hildebrandt, which I thought were fabulous. This calendar features moments in the "pre-history" of world of Rings world, by Alan Lee, whose paintings are dramatic, and epic ... they are suitable for framing. As the calendar features events in Tale of the Fall of Gondolin, and because I am an avid Tolkien fan, I had to buy this calendar. I am very pleased with it. I haven't yet purchased The Fall of Gondolin, but I certainly shall, after seeing these paintings!
I've been buying these Tolkien calendars since they were first issued. Some have been less appealing than others, but this year's calendar (2019) illustrated by Alan Lee is superb. I look forward to admiring each month's new picture.John J. PuccioClassical Candor
