I love these books. I love giving these books to my children to read. I own them all.This book is primarily about equality in general and equality between the sexes in particular, which is a more than worthy subject and one that it is good to introduce to children at an early age, and Billie Jean King's life story is indeed inspiring.The one caveat to consider is that the book does touch on Billie Jean King's homosexuality. It does so in an entirely appropriate way. However, you have to consider that these books are targeted at a young audience and every parent has to make a personal decision regarding how and when they want to broach the subject of diversity with each and every one of their own children. If you think that your child is not yet ready for that, wait to get this book both you and your child are ready. At that point, it may be one of the best ways to approach that subject.
Warning to parents, this Ordinary People Change the World book is for older kids. Many of the Ordinary People Change the World books address heavy topics like racism, misogyny & other forms of oppression in a manner that children can understand and relate to with some discussion. This book is also focused on Billie Jean King's battle against sexism, up until a page that addresses her sexuality. While that is an important part of Billie Jean King's identity and her life struggle, its a topic that younger children won't understand. Older kids may understand, but for parents of younger children I recommend they review the book before they read it, otherwise you will have some impromptu editing. This book would be great once a child brings up questions about same sex couples and equality, but it may not be the way you want to introduce that topic.
Like the other books in this series, we loved this book. I've been reading this series to my kids since they were 4 years old - some are a little long so when they get bored we skim some pages while still following this story. As a physician and a mom I will completely disagree with the other reviews about this book - there is no age that can't understand the concept of homosexuality. This book literally has one page where she states she is gay and explains what that means (a girl who romantically loves a girl, a boy who romantically loves a boy) and she throws in a little statement along the lines of - You can't help who your heart loves. There is no child on earth that will be confused by that. What they will find confusing, however, is adults who can't grasp that concept or adults who infer that that topic is something uncomfortable or odd.The entire series grapples with actual difficult concepts - mostly centered around why do we have laws and beliefs that make us treat people unfairly? It is a great way to start a conversation with kids about how unfair the world can be and how some amazing people have found the courage to change it. Buy this book and all the books - read them to your kids and give them to all of their friends. Brace yourself for some insightful and important conversations for all ages - it is amazing to see them start to understand and to start to think about how they want to make the world better too.
My girls (7 and 9 years old) loves so much this collection. This book is not an exception. As an adult I learned so much too. I am looking forward to see which next book is to come !
This book explored a lot of social issues and told Ms. King’s story expertly. My daughter is a huge fan of all the Ordinary People Change the World “I Am†biographies. Mr. Meltzer is amazing in how he tells each story and makes it relatable to children and adults.
I really enjoyed reading this book. My husband knew nothing of BJK so it was educational for him as well. My son is too young to appreciate it yet but I plan to read it to him often anyway.
I purchased two for my nieces to share and my nephew. They absolutely love the book and illustrations as do I.
My 6 year old read this book for her 1st grade project. Very detailed and easy for children to understand.
